Using this Cube.

No need for any lengthy description – just play with the buttons on offer and it should quickly become clear what they do. What isn’t so clear is that you can turn any visible cube face clockwise by clicking on the centre block of that face and turn any visible cube face anti clockwise by clicking on any one of the four edge block faces that surround that centre block face.

Solving a Scrambled Cube.

Cube faces are identified by their centre block colour. So the red face is that face with red at its centre, etc. This computer cube always has a yellow Top face and a white Bottom face. The cube solution described below completes the bottom layer first, then the middle layer and finally the top layer. At any stage in the solve process you can store the cube’s state using the Store button. Then, if you subsequently make a mistake you can return to that stored state using the Restore button. I suggest storing the cube state at the end of each completed stage.

The solve help diagrams below all show the blue face as the front face and consequently in those diagrams red is the right face, green the back face and orange the left face. But when doing a move sequence any one of the side faces can be the front face during that move sequence. Put your chosen front face where the blue face is in the diagram and the move sequences illustrated involve face rotations relative to your front face. Once a move sequence is completed you will most likely need to establish a different front face for the next move sequence.

Letters below the solve diagrams are face move sequences. The capitalised letters call for a clockwise turn of a face (click its centre block or the clockwise colour button). The lower case letters require a counter-clockwise turn of a face (click an edge block on that face or the anti clockwise colour button). F means turn your chosen front face clockwise, f means turn the front face anticlockwise, R means turn the right face clockwise, r means turn the right face anticlockwise, L means turn the left face clockwise and l means turn the left face anticlockwise. You can perform these rotations using the button controls or by clicking on the cube faces.

Arrows on the diagrams at stages 2, 3, 5 and 7 indicate how a block or a block and its faces will be moved by that move sequence. Arrows at stage 4 indicate how two top edge blocks can be flipped by that move sequence. Arrows at stage 6 indicate how three of the four top corner blocks can be moved by that move sequence.

Further help for individual stages can be found below the diagrams.

Solve Stages Additional Help

At stage 1 no sequence is offered but I give the following two pieces of advice. Aim to get bottom edge blocks to the top face such that their white faces are uppermost. Then you simply have to turn the top face to align its non white face with the cube side of that colour and then do a half turn of that side. If in rotating cube side faces to get a white face uppermost you disturb any already finally positioned bottom edge blocks, simply turn the top face so that your white face upper block will remain a white face upper block when you return the disturbed block to its final position.
All stage 2 move sequences require bottom corner blocks to start at the top level with their white faces on a side.If a bottom corner block is on the top face but with its white face uppermost turn the cube to place the home location of that block at the bottom corner nearest you. Now turn the top face so that the block with the white face uppermost is nearest you after which turn the right face clockwise followed by a turn of the top face anti-clockwise then return the right face to where it was by doing an anti clockwise move. You can now position the block to to do one of the move sequences. If you need to move a wrongly located or rotated bottom corner block to the top face, turn the cube to position that block at bottom front and do either of the move sequences to take the block to the top face.
At stage 3 you might find a middle edge block reversed. Simply replace it with any top face edge block using either of the stage 3 move sequences. Then with the desired block now on the top level pick the sequence that correctly positions it at its edge position.

Stage 5 move sequence swaps the position of two top corner blocks. At this stage we are not trying to finalise the blocks and have their yellow faces uppermost. That is the task in the next stage. We are simply correctly positioning corner blocks relative to one another. Going anti-clockwise round the upper face the corner blocks will have in addition to yellow – blue/red, red/green, green/orange and orange/blue. One corner swap will normally achieve this but sometimes you have to do two swaps. Note that as this move sequence, unlike earlier sequences, involves the turning of both left and right sides of the cube. If you are clicking on cube faces it is necessary to turn the cube as a whole anti-clockwise (viewed from above) to access the left side and then clockwise to access the cube right side.
In stage 6 diagrams arrows reveal how three of the four top corners can be rotated either clockwise or anti-clockwise. If just one of the corners has its yellow face uppermost one of the two sequences will finalise the other three corners. If however you have no yellow faces uppermost, two yellow faces uppermost or three yellow faces uppermost you will have to do two move sequences. The first sequence you select and use has to leave the cube top corners with just one yellow face uppermost. Then select and do the sequence that finalises the other three corner blocks.
At stage 7 with the top face corner blocks in their final locations examine the top side blocks to see if they also align. If they all align you’re done. If one only aligns use the appropriate move sequence to align the other three. If no side faces or two faces align choose a move sequence that will leave you with just one aligned. Then select and do the move sequence that gets the other three blocks.
in their final position, and so complete the cube.
